1. IDENTIFICATION OF THE SUBSTANCE:

SILICA SAND

2. COMPOSITION / INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS

Salica sands are typically composed of a minimum of
97% quartz and have a varity of uses in industrial and
ceramic applications.

3.HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION

Prolonged exposure to the fine airborne particales
may be harmful due to the inhalation of respirable
crystalline silica.
Silica sand can cause gastrcintestinal irritation if
in ingested.
Not recommended for dry sand blasting

4. FIRST AID MEASURES

GENERAL - unlikely tobe hazardous if handled
correctly.
SKIN - wash with soap and water.
EYES - lrrigate with copious amounts of water and
obtain medical attention if soreness persists.
INGESTION - give water to drink and seek medical
advice.

5.FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

No fire or explosive hazard

6.ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

Personal Precautions - Do not breathe fine dust.
In areas with insufficient ventilation wear suitable respiratory protection equipment,
ENVIRONMENTAL PRECAUTIONS - No Denger,
METHODS FOR CLEANING - Vauum system. Utilise water spraying to prevent airborne dust.
Avoid dry sweeping, which creates dust.

7.HANDLING AND STORAGE

HANDLING
*assess manul handling requirements
*handle to minimise the creation of airborne dust
*avoid inhaling dust.
STORAGE OF DRY SILICA SAND
*bags should be palletised and stored in
ventilated area
*bulk storage in silos should be vented through
suitable arrestment equipment.

8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION

ENGINEERING CONTROLS - Dust controls to comply with requirements of the COSHH Regulations 1994.
UK EH40 MEL EXPOSURE LIMIT - 0.3 mg / m 8h TWA .As respirable crystalline silica
.
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION - Dust masks, Airstream helmets to an approved standard if conditions are dusty.
Sand stored in the open should be in bays, sheeted
or kept damp to minimize air borne emissions.

9.PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES:

Appearance: fine, free flowing white to pink powder
depending on grade.
Odour: none explosive properties N/A.
Solubility: insoluble relative density 2.65

10. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY:

No safety issues relating to stability and reactivity
of product under normal conditions.

11. TOXICOLOGICAL - INFORMATION

HARMFUL - possibale risk of irrevrsible
effects long term exposure can cause permanent
damage to lungs and disease to the HSE.

12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION:

Not hazardous- silica sand is involatile, insoluble
and resistant to biodegradation.

13. DISPOSAL CONSIDERATION

Safe Handling Of Any Residues/Waste Product - as in inert
matreal . an approved solid waste disposal or landfill
site may be used.

14. TRANSPORT INFORMATION:

Special carriage precautions-nil, material suitable for bulk tankers and sealed bags.

EYE PROTECTION - protection is recommended

15. REGULATORY INFORMATION

SUPPLY LABEL INFORMATION- Not subject to
the hazardous substance conveyance regulation
and lablling is not required . the product itself is not
classifide as a hazardous product but contains an
amount of crystalline silica which is classified
as R20. hower as the amount will always be below
25% it dose not make the product hazardous.
RISK PHRASES & SAFETY PHRASES
R20- harmful by inhalation
S22- do not breathe dust.
